Trivia / Splinter of the Mind's Eye

Go To

  • Completely Different Title: The original German edition of the book was titled The New Adventures of Luke Skywalker. Later, for the 1992 German Reissue, the title was changed to Skywalker's Return.
  • Development Gag: The Kaiburr Crystal was originally the MacGuffin in an early script for Star Wars. Since then, respelled kyber crystals were reintroduced to canon as the crystals used in lightsabers. Kyber crystals also play a major role in Rogue One where they serve as the focusing crystals for the Death Star superlaser.
  • Executive Meddling: Because of plans to possibly adapt Splinter of the Mind's Eye as a low-budget sequel, Foster was told to write a story that could be filmed cheaply. This resulted in the bulk of the story being set on a foggy swamp planet and the cutting of what Foster termed "a modestly extensive space battle." Han Solo and Chewbacca don't appear (but are indirectly referred to) due to Harrison Ford not being signed for a sequel at the time of the book's writing. The book also contained one scene where the faces of some stormtroopers were not covered by their helmet, but Lucasfilm prohibited this from being depicted in the comic.
  • Technology Marches On: Even though the Empire and the Rebel Alliance have advanced Artificial Intelligence droids and starships, they use tapes for storing information. This is because in 1978 when the book was published tapes were still widely used as data storage devices.
