Trivia / Spartacus Blood And Sand S 1 E 13 Kill Them All

Go To

  • Deleted Scene:
    • Two scenes were scripted for Mira and Glaber's guard Vesper. He would be guarding the door to the wine stores, and she would flirt with him to get down, and then after she stabs the guard, he would ask about why she's so bloodied. They were cut for pacing.
    • Aurelia had a long monologue when speaking to Spartacus, explaining exactly how she put two and two together that Ashur was poisoning Crixus; she knows that Marcellus in the marketplace is only visited when one needs shady things done, and guesses correctly that Ashur got poison. It was filmed but cut in the editing room, feeling it was unnecessary exposition.
    • Dan Feuerriegel recalls filming a scene where Agron and Oenomaus walk among the corpses towards the end, the latter saying that the ludus was his home for so long, and Agron would say "then I fucking pity you" and walk off.
    • As Spartacus is comforting Aurelia after stabbing Numerius, a Roman guard would come up behind them and attempt to kill the distracted Spartacus, only to get killed by Oenomaus walking in. It was cut to allow for the more emotional impact the scene has in the finished episode.
  • Enforced Method Acting: Manu Bennett had opted to remain sober throughout the season, but had to take a shot of tequila before filming the scene of Crixus confronting Lucretia, since this would be the first time the character ever spoke to her without fear.
  • Executive Meddling: From the beginning, Steven S DeKnight wanted Lucretia to be killed by Crixus stabbing her while pregnant, but the higher-ups repeatedly said "no, you can't do that". Towards the end of the season, they called to ask if Lucretia could survive to Season 2, and he lobbied for her to still be stabbed in the womb but in a way that she could survive. They compromised on using a Gory Discretion Shot for it.
  • Spared by the Cut: The shot of Quintus and Lucretia dying next to each other was filmed two ways; one where Lucretia was definitely dead and one where she is still moving. Steven S DeKnight ultimately decided that she would live, and chose the second one for the edit.
  • Throw It In!: The shot of one guard falling from the balcony and off the cliff wasn't in the script and was thought up during filming.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The fight between Crixus and Spartacus was scripted to take place at night, but they then realised it would make for a more striking visual if it happened during a sunset.
    • The slaughter was scripted in more vivid detail but had to be scaled back to fit into the filming schedule. Also, the Starz network was worried about the main protagonists being seen slaughtering defenceless civilians, so they came up with the impressionistic sequence seen after Illithyia has the doors sealed.
    • After Duro's death, it was scripted that Agron would go mad and kill every remaining Roman in the square as a One-Man Army. It was cut to let the emotional impact of losing his brother hang.
