Trivia / SoundSmith

  • Creator Backlash:
    • SoundSmith has made his disdain for Stereotypes very prominent during the Misc section of the series. This was due to no longer finding it fun or fresh, the lowbrow comedy effort compared to his other projects, and a persistent fanbase who take the stereotypes at face value, won't shut up about the series, and asking when the next episode is coming out. After releasing the Spy Misc Stereotypes in June 2020, Ethan has made it adamant that he will no longer make any more Stereotype videos due to his severe frustration and burnout from making them. This eventually reached the point where he made War Paint Stereotypes, a deliberately bad and soulless video dedicated to everyone who begged him for another Stereotypes video anyway.
      • He goes into a bit more detail on his dislike of the series in this video, explaining that due to his lack of understanding of satire (namely having a clear target and purpose), making assumptions about random players based on their appearances and weapon choice caused Stereotypes to become what it was trying to make fun of, thus making much of the fans who took the videos seriously a Misaimed Fandom.
    • He also heavily regrets advertising himself as a "TF2ber" and transitioning to doing different content way too late, due to amassing a fanbase that mostly wanted to see content from Team Fortress 2 specifically, which made it much more difficult for Ethan to start doing variety content.
  • Colbert Bump: Like most TF2 creators, his content and popularity has influenced the popularity of cosmetics he uses and features, such as his own signature Dr. Dapper's Topper. SoundSmith invokes it in the Soldier Misc Stereotypes video when discussing the "Lone Survivor" (a mustache and 5-o'clock shadow makeover for Soldier), mentioning a friend who hopes his feature of the misc will artificially inflate its value in the TF2 economy, but telling viewers to ignore it. Guess what happened, though.
    • Subsequently subverted in the Pyro Misc Stereotypes video, where Soundsmith goes to the trouble prior to release to buy up tons of "Pyrobotics Pack" (the MVM Robo-Pyro's airtank backpack for the human(?) Pyro) and imply he's about to promote/artificially-inflate its value as well, only to go about roasting the Misc as one of, if not THE worst cosmetic in the game, so tough luck, anyone who was waiting for lightning to strike twice!... except there was still a bump in the Misc's economy price as a result of the video.
    • Between these two miscs and the fallout of Legend of the Duped Shovel (where Soundsmith & friends messing about in a trade server while giving OrnaBug a glitch-dupe Shovel for Soldier) bumping the price of glitch-dupe items as a whole, it's become a meme on the channel that Soundsmith keeps manipulating TF2's economy, be it in accidental or intentional schemes... An idea that is Played for Drama with the "Clubsy Conspiracy" skits in Misc Stereotypes.
  • Magnum Opus Dissonance: Though Ethan's retroactive hatred of the Stereotypes series is well-documented and he's clearly much prouder of his work on Mann's Guide, the Stereotypes series is still his aggregate most viewed series and what launched his channel's career, and many of his fans believe that he sells the series short a lot of the time and that it has a lot of redeeming qualities.
  • Meme Role Reprise:
    • Nathan Vetterlein briefly appears in one of the Misc Stereotypes videos as the Scout, where he attempts to do a cover of Wonderwall.
    • John Patrick Lowrie himself voices the "Clever girl..." bit in "A Mann's Guide to the Backburner".
  • Throw It In!: In A Mann's Guide to the Beggar's Bazooka, SoundSmith first mispronounced Marketplace.tf as Markiplier.tf for the sponsor. He kept the line with Markiplier's iconic pink mustache edited onto Marketplace.tf's logo.
  • What Could Have Been: At one point, Ethan mentioned some other ideas for Stereotypes he could do, such as Map Stereotypes, Taunt Stereotypes, Class Stereotypes, and "honorable mentions" that he left out. As of the release of Spy Misc Stereotypes however, these videos are all but confirmed to never be happening, due to him being finished with the series and refusing to make any more videos for it besides the deliberately bad War Paint Stereotypes.
