Trivia / Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart

• Ascended Fanfic: Various character addons for SRB2 Kart were added to the base unlockable roster in Ring Racers, such as Carol Tea and Maria Robotnik.
• Author's Saving Throw:
  • With the release of v2.1 of Ring Racers came some much-requested tweaks to the game, such as being able to skip out of the Forced Tutorial at any point (the race of which is easier), more passwords to further unlock content quicker, the CPU rubberbanding being significantly reduced, and allowing all tracks to be played online from the get-go instead of just those from the first seven cups.
  • v2.2 went a bit further, swapping the positions of the second and fourth Sealed Star stages, preventing all CPUs from increasing in difficulty on the easiest difficulty setting (now dubbed "Relaxed"), naming all difficulty settings aside from Master (Normal to "Intense", and Hard to "Vicious" respectively), easing unlock requirements for some characters and companions, and allowing new cups to be unlocked just by placing Bronze or higher on an available cup, even on the Relaxed difficulty.
• Colbert Bump: The developers deliberately avoided adding music from popular sources (including the Sonic franchise itself) unless necessary, thus many obscure songs gained some exposure thanks to this game. A standout example is Kart's main menu theme and Ring Racer's title theme, "Fluvial Beat Deposits"; some people thought it was a custom remix of the Leitmotif from Sonic Mania!
• Divorced Installment: Version 2 was confirmed to be on the receiving end of one though the re-branding to Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers, dropping the Sonic Robo Blast 2 moniker altogether. Zig-Zagged however by the alternative title screen, which has SRB2KART2 as a subtitle.
• Official Fan-Submitted Content:
  • Before development of new racers was moved to in-house contributions, many of the characters in BonusChars across Version 1 and the early development periods of Version 2 before its re-branding as Ring Racers were donations by various community members from separately-released mods, either as is or with new sets of sprites.
  • A number of selectable player skin colors that were added post-launch were community designs, such examples include Pigeon, Artichoke, Cinnamon, Lemonade, Crocodile, Wristwatch, and Pastel.
  • The Community Cup in SRB2 Kart consists of five tracks made by community members.
• Throw It In!: How bonuschars.kart came to be: A member of the development team simply wanted Chao, Shadow and Gamma in the game, even if their spriting skills weren't up to par with the quality of the default cast. Because the team didn't want to throw their work away, it was added as extra content. This eventually developed into a massive collaboration between creators to add more Sonic (and SEGA) characters into the addon, as Official Fan-Submitted Content notes up above, and the file would eventually be part of the base characters file for Ring Racers.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Super SRB2 Kart Z illustrated a very different future for SRB2Kart, including a greater Mario Kart inspiration up to using items directly from the series instead of expies and original tracks based on the Mario universe. The number of ported tracks in the base game were also more numerous. Only a small number of Mario Kart ports return for the project's rebranding in SRB2Kart before being removed altogether for Ring Racers in favor of original tracks designed with the game's new features, mechanics, and physics in mind.
  • As shown by bonuschars.kart predecessor "misc.wad", Original Characters and Super Mario Bros. characters were fair game for bundled addons, as shown in Knockout the Echidna and Waluigi (albeit a certain version of the latter).
  • As stated in Divorced Installment above, Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers was originally known as Version 2.0, before the Sonic Robo Blast 2 moniker was dropped.
  • Extra game modes were planned to be built in for Ring Racers, including versions of modifications originally from Kart which the Kart Krew had made. But most of them were scrapped during development, leaving only SPB Attack as a mode that is unlockable in the base game.
