Trivia / Smosh: The Movie

Go To

  • Creator Backlash: Neither Ian Hecox nor Anthony Padilla look back on the film fondly, in part due to their inexperience with feature filmmaking, their lack of creative control, and the amount of Bowdlerization they had to engage in to ensure that the movie would get a PG-13 rating. One of the duo's first YouTube skits after their 2023 reunion, "WE SUMMONED A DEMON", even features the movie as a torture device, reflecting the pair's poor view of it.
  • Executive Meddling:
    • While livetweeting a rewatch of the movie, Anthony Padilla revealed that a number of moments in the film had to be edited down in order to prevent it from getting an R rating. Ian Hecox corroborated these claims in a 2020 interview with Cold Ones, stating that market studies indicated that PG-13 movies generally sell better than films with any other rating and that "the people that had the control of the cut freaked the fuck out and then just started cutting a bunch of stuff from the movie and censoring a bunch of stuff," not helped by the MPAA's lack of explanation over what generated the R rating. Hecox additionally blamed the "puritanical" nature of American culture and the consequent double standard regarding sexual content vs. violent content.
    • In his 2020 appearance on Cold Ones, Hecox revealed that he and Padilla had almost no creative control over the film, stating that it was written by hired scriptwriters and that the duo's input on the content was very minimal.
