• Serendipity Writes the Plot: In the original script, John was supposed to be driving the Land Rover with Sherlock as the passenger. But it was changed as Martin Freeman does not know how to drive.
• What Could Have Been:
  • In the original script, John was to see the hound in a meat locker, but while scouting the location, the producers determined it would be too expensive to film there and too cold for Freeman.
  • Early script drafts had Henry accidentally kill Louise Mortimer, but producers were never satisfied with this development, thinking Henry would have failed if she died.
  • The writers posited that Henry's father's murder involved revenge after he had an affair, but the producers and Mark Gatiss found it easier to mention he died because he learned of Franklin's experiments with the hallucinogenic gas.
  • The episode was originally going to end with Moriarty entering the Tower of London. That was saved for the next episode.
