  • Dawson Casting: The Gloria Scott, The Musgrave Ritual and The Saviour of Cripplegate Square all involve lengthy flashbacks with the middle aged Merrison playing Holmes at university age.
  • Flashback with the Other Darrin: The Marlbourne Point Mystery: Part Two features a brief re-enactment of the denouement from The Remarkable Performance of Mr Frederick Merridew, with Richard Dillane replacing Hugh Bonneville as Merridew.
  • The Other Darrin: Quite a few examples:
    • Dr. Watson was voiced by Michael Williams for the entirety of the Doyle-based run, with Andrew Sachs taking over for The Further Adventures after Williams' death.
    • Mrs. Hudson was voiced initially by Anna Cropper, then Mary Allen. Joan Matheson voiced her for the majority of the series, with Judi Dench making a cameo appearance for The Hound of the Baskervilles. The Further Adventures relegated her to She Who Must Not Be Seen.
    • From A Study in Scarlet to The Second Stain, Inspector Lestrade was portrayed by Donald Gee. Stephen Thorne took over thereafter, and was the only regular aside from Clive Merrison to reprise his role for The Further Adventures (although guest actor Siôn Probert did reprise his role as Athelney Jones from The Sign of the Four for The Singular Inheritance of Miss Gloria Wilson and The Thirteen Watches).
    • Inspector Gregson was voiced first by John Moffatt and later by Ronald Herdman.
    • Stamford is a minor, but pivotal character from A Study in Scarlet; as it is he who introduces Watson to Holmes. He is given three further cameo appearances in later episodes, played by a different actor each time: Paul Downing in A Study in Scarlet, Keith Drinkel in The Empty House, Norman Rodway in His Last Bow and Malcolm Tierney in The Remarkable Performance of Mr Frederick Merridew.
    • Mary Watson (née Morstan) was voiced by three different actresses in each of her subsequent appearances: Moir Leslie, Elisabeth Mansfield and Jillie Meers.
    • Mycroft Holmes was voiced by John Hartley in the Doyle stories, and by James Laurenson in the Further Adventures finale The Marlbourne Point Mystery.
    • Professor Moriarty was voiced by Michael Pennington in The Final Problem and The Empty House, and by Ronald Pickup in The Valley of Fear.
    • Shinwell Johnson is portrayed by Neville Jason in The Illustrious Client, and by Dan Starkey in The Ferrers Documents.
    • Canon Foreigner Frederick Merridew from The Further Adventures is played by Hugh Bonneville in The Remarkable Performance of Mr Frederick Merridew, and by Richard Dillane in The Marlbourne Point Mystery.
  • Recast as a Regular: Andrew Sachs portrayed the King of Bohemia in A Scandal in Bohemia, before taking over the role of Dr. Watson for The Further Adventures.
