- Technology Marches On:
- With the advancement of phones having caller ID, Beverly would've instantly been found out after making obscene phone calls to Dottie.
- Chip working at a video rental store looks out of date since most of these stores have closed down in favor of kiosks and streaming services, and since VHS's have been replaced with DVD's and Blu-Rays, especially since he charges Mrs. Jensen for not rewinding a videotape when returning.
- What Could Have Been:
- John Waters considered offering Meryl Streep, Julie Andrews, Kathy Bates, Glenn Close, or Mary Tyler Moore the role of Beverly before Kathleen Turner signed on. Meanwhile, the producers urged him to consider other high-profile actresses such as Goldie Hawn, Jessica Lange, and Susan Sarandon (who was interested, but wanted too much money). Cybill Shepherd was a serious candidate, but was ultimately rejected for not looking similar to Ricki Lake, who had already been cast as Beverly's daughter Misty. Sally Field and Tracey Ullman were also considered.
- Chevy Chase was considered for the role of Eugene Sutphin.
