    • The song "Hope I Grow Old Before I Die" by They Might Be Giants from their album They Might Be Giants (Album) (1986) is a shout-out to "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)".
    • In Highlander, the Kurgan quotes the line "it's better to burn out than to fade away" from "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)". A sample of this moment also appears in the Queen song "Gimme the Prize (Kurgan's Theme)" (the track's parent album, A Kind of Magic, consisted mostly of material that the band wrote for the movie).
    • A macabre shout-out was made by Kurt Cobain in his suicide note, where he closed out the letter by quoting the line "it's better to burn out than to fade away" from "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)". Young later dedicated his 1994 album, Sleeps with Angels, to Cobain.
    • The Australian rock band Powderfinger named themselves after the song from this album.
  • Short-Lived, Big Impact: "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" is often interpreted as favoring this lifestyle in-song, because of the line "It's better to burn out than to fade away".
