Trivia / Roy Orbison

Go To

  • Died During Production: Orbison died in the middle of his Career Resurrection, causing his comeback album Mystery Girl to be released posthumously. This is lampshaded in the Traveling Wilburys' music video for End of the Line, which showed a rocking chair with a guitar in it next to Orbison's picture during his vocal parts.
  • Career Resurrection: Made a huge comeback in the late 1980s and unfortunately died in the middle of it.
  • Referenced by...: In addition to the obvious Pretty Woman, his earliest hit, "Ooby Dooby", made an appearance in Star Trek: First Contact. It would be the first sampling of Earth music that the visiting Vulcans would hear on their first contact with the humans led by Zefram Cochrane in 2063.
  • Revival by Commercialization: His '80s comeback began with the use of "In Dreams" in Blue Velvet. Orbison did not authorize the use of the song or know it was going to be used, but David Lynch was able to find a loophole to get around his lack of permission. Orbison initially found it shocking and mortifying, but changed his mind after re-watching the film and later collaborated with Lynch to re-record it.
  • What Could Have Been: You can't help but wonder how much further his late 80s comeback could have gone if it weren't for his untimely death.
