Trivia / Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling

Go To

  • Channel Hop: This special, along with Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, were supposed to air on Nickelodeon. However, after Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie flopped against Trolls Holiday in the ratings, they were moved to Netflix.
  • Character Outlives Actor: Kevin Meaney, who played Widow Hutchison, died in October 2016. As such, she only has a voiceless cameo.
  • Descended Creator: Creator and co-director Joe Murray reprises his role as Rachel Bighead, while fellow co-director Cosmo Segurson voices the culturally ambiguous pillow salesman, among other characters.
  • The Other Darrin: Many voice actors were replaced in the Static Cling movie:
    • In the Latin American Spanish dub, Rocko was replaced from the late Carlos Íñigo to Gabriel Gama, while Mrs. Bighead was also replaced from Guadalupe Noel to Magda Giner. Mr. Dupette is a interesting case, as he was originally voiced by Alejandro Illescas in the last seasons of the TV series as the replacement of Alejandro Mayen, his previous voice actor, but since Illescas has also passed away, Mayen reprised the role once again. Outside those changes, the rest of the cast reprise their roles once again.note
    • The Japanese dub got worse, as they replaced the entire cast, with Rocko being replaced from Koichi Tochika to Kunihiro Kawamoto, Filburt from Masaya Takatsuka to Toshihide Tsuchiya and Ed Bighead from the late Seizō Katō to Yasuhiro Mamiya.
    • The entire French and Italian casts were replaced, as not much info was known about the dubs of the original series.
    • The only European Spanish cast member to return was Eduardo Gutierrez (Rocko), who was the voice director of the original series and Static Cling.
    • Most of the Brazilian Portuguese cast was replaced, except for Zayra Zordan as Bev Bighead.
    • Just like some of the examples above, the entire cast was replaced in the Norwegian dub.
  • Playing Against Type: In the Japanese dub, Kunihiro Kawamoto (Rocko) is well-known for voicing tough guys or authority figures, and he is better known for another legendary badass, Kenshiro, in stark contrast with the timid Rocko. Likewise, Heffer's voice actor, Nobutoshi Canna, is well-known for also voicing Hot-Blooded protagonists, including Guts, Ban Mido and Basara Nekki, or villains like Naruto's Kabuto Yakushi.
  • Production Lead Time: The special is explicitly set in The New '10s and contains many jokes about contemporary culture and technology, some of them rather dated, due to the special’s constant delay. Still, the references are kept to a minimum and the special still managed to handle the message pretty well.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Many of the fresh-faced artists working on the special had been fans of the show during its original run. Joe Murray admitted that they were better at remembering specific gags and details that the original crew had forgotten by that point.
  • Trans Character, Cis Actor: Rachel Bighead is revealed to be a transgender woman, however she is still voiced by her original voice actor Joe Murray, who is a cisgender man.
  • The Shelf of Movie Languishment: The special was completed in 2017-18, but the low ratings of The Jungle Movie coupled with a new management de-emphasizing the animated product (focusing instead on reviving live-action properties), caused the movie to be postponed for over a year.
