Trivia / Roadside Picnic

  • Executive Meddling: The Strugatsky brothers essentially had to battle the entire government bureaucracy of the Soviet Union for almost ten years to get Roadside Picnic published as a full-length book, even in a butchered form.
  • Life Imitates Art: Roadside Picnic is about people going into a zone filled with chemical hazards to retrieve items of value. The production of the film adaptation, Stalker (1979), exposed many of the crew to hazardous chemicals in abandoned industrial sites and power plants in Estonia. Later, when the Chernobyl Disaster occurred people who returned to the Exclusion Zone to retrieve their valuables were called "stalkers".
