Trivia / Red Dwarf Season IV "Meltdown"

Go To

  • Celebrity Voice Actor: In the Czech dub, the Elvis Presley waxdroid is voiced by Karel Zich, a Czech singer, sometimes referred to as "Czech Elvis Presley".
  • Deleted Scene:
    • Two cuts for time were made as the crew prepare to use the Matter Paddle. The Cat says that, as the most awesome-looking guy in the Universe, he isn't having his molecules rearranged. He also says that Rimmer being 200,000 light-years away isn't far enough.
    • Rimmer and Kryten's encounter with the monsters in prehistoric world was originally longer.
    • More time with Elvis and Pope Gregory XIII's waxdroids, with Rimmer referring to St Gregory as the patron saint of GBH (Grievous Bodily Harm) when Gregory threatens to turn Rimmer's head into a bowling ball.
    • Lister and Cat experience further terror in their prison cell. Lister says that the Nazis may turn them into handbags, and Cat doesn't mind if he goes out as matching accessories.
    • Kryten's further discoveries about Waxworld include its original size, and that it used to house 10,000 waxdroids.
    • More battle footage includes Stan Laurel's death.
  • Edited for Syndication: In a 2012 repeat:
    • Lister calling Goering "the fat bastard" was changed to him calling Goering "the fat one", with the edit hidden thanks to a cutaway shot outside the chimney.
    • When Rimmer tells St. Francis of Assisi that the only kinds from Assisi are "steers and queers", the line is cut earlier to make Kryten interrupt Rimmer before he can be offensive.
  • Magnum Opus Dissonance: In the Series IV DVD Commentary, the cast talk about how most fans dislike the episode, speculating that perhaps it wasn't "space-y" enough. In contrast, the cast all talk about their love for it and how many classic scenes it contains.
  • The Other Marty: The actor originally playing Gandhi, Alex Tetteh-Lartey, had to be replaced since he couldn't take the cold, and the push-ups.
  • Out of Order: The episode was intended to be the opening episode of Series IV. However, it was moved to the sixth and last episode because of concerns that viewers would consider it insensitive due to the Gulf War. If hostilities had continued, it might not have been shown at all.
  • Troubled Production: Filming had problems with terrible weather at their location (which forced the withdrawal of the original Gandhi actor after he came down with a cold), which also happened to be on the flight path to Heathrow airport, forcing filming to be stopped whenever a plane flew overhead. Then, the outbreak of the Gulf War caused the BBC to move it back to the end of the season.
  • You Look Familiar: Tony Hawks makes his last appearance in the series as Caligula.
