- Biggie wanted to take his debut into a more straightforward hardcore direction, but was convinced by Puffy to lean into the R&B side of things to have more commercial appeal; hence tracks like "Juicy" and "Big Poppa", both of which he didn't want to record initially.
- Biggie wanted "Machine Gun Funk" to be the lead single, but was overruled by Puffy, who chose "Juicy" instead. As a compromise, "Unbelievable" was the B-side.
- Craig Mack was going to be featured on Biggie's "Warning", but attitude problems and rumored beef between the two kept it from happening.
