• Breakthrough Hit: "I Got a Woman".
• Genre Popularizer: Either "I Got a Woman" or "What'd I Say" is considered to be this for Soul, depending on who you ask, but either way, it was Ray.
• Playing Their Own Twin: In a 1990s commercial for Diet Pepsi, Ray introduces his twin brother Herb Charles, also played by Ray. In addition, the Raelettes (Ray's backup singers) each have twins of their own, the Herbettes.
• Throw It In!: "What'd I Say" was a total improvisation. Ray and his group came to the end of his set list at a concert, but found they still had time left over. Ray told his group to follow his lead as he fooled around, and the audience reaction was overwhelming.
