  • Creator Killer: As detailed in this French video dealing with the twilight years of Irem, Super R-Type ended up killing Irem's USA division. The division massively overproduced the game, expecting it to sell "at least 250,000 copies" due to being a North American launch title for the SNES. In the end, 300,000 copies of Super R-Type were produced, but the game only sold 50,000 copies. From then on, any games by Irem are published by third-party publisher outside Japan.
  • Creator's Oddball: The arcade version was published by Nintendo in North America. This wouldn't be the last time they published a third-party game (they would later do the same for Mega Man 6), but this is notable because it's an arcade game that doesn't use Nintendo's hardware and despite its 1987 release, it would not see a release on the then-current Nintendo Entertainment System (ironically, it was released on its competitors, the Sega Master System and TurboGrafx-16); it would take until 1991 to get released on a Nintendo system, the Game Boy, and until 2006 for a Nintendo home console release on the Wii (more specifically, the TG16 version via the Virtual Console service)note .
  • Late Export for You:
    • DLC Set 4 for Final 2 was released in October 2021...if you have the Xbox Series X|S or PC versions, the Japanese or European PS4 versions, or the Japanese Switch version. Due to having to edit one particular boss fight in Stage Y1.0, which has a tendril that's clearly shaped like a penis, to meet platform policies, North American PS4 and Western Switch players had to wait until December 2021 for DLC Set 4 to be released on those platforms.
    • Operation Bitter Chocolate finally got announced for a worldwide release in a package called R-Type Tactics I & II Cosmos.
  • No Port For You: Leo was never ported to consumer platforms.
  • Port Overdosed: The original R-Type is one of the most-ported shmups ever made, appearing on every 80s home computer, and having several modern re-releases.
  • Referenced by...: The DanceDanceRevolution song "DDR TAGMIX -LAST DanceR-" is a reference to the R-99 "Last Dancer" fighter from R-Type Final.
  • Sequel Gap: R-Type Final II was released in 2021, being the first R-Type game in over a decade.note
  • What Could Have Been: In an interview with M2 CEO Naoki Horii, when Sega approached the company to develop a game for the Game Gear, the company originally wanted to port R-Type Leo for the Sega Genesis, but Sega rejected the proposal in favor of a port of Gunstar Heroes for the Game Gear instead.
