• The Cast Show Off: Singer-songwriter Naturi Naughton gets quite a few musical numbers over the course of the series. Subverted with Jukebox, who is played by accomplished singer Anika Noni Rose and boasts to Tariq in one scene about being able to imitate anybody vocally, but doesn't end up singing to him, only quietly humming about three lines of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" after he has fallen asleep.

• Playing Against Type:
  • Zig-zagged with 50 Cent as Kanan; in the show's backstory, Kanan is exactly the type of character 50 is known to portray, a hardened, hardcore gangster. But when we meet him in the show, having been in prison for some time, he's quiet, reasonable, and simply happy to see his son who's come to visit him, and even somewhat regretful that his son is slowly following into his footsteps. Before Loyalty reveals that he's actually the one behind the attacks on Ghost's organization and is planning on having him and Tommy killed.
  • LaVerne "Jukebox" Ganner, a violent, murderous, street-hardened corrupt cop, is certainly a departure for her portrayer, former Disney princess Anika Noni Rose.
