Trivia / Pokémon Trading Card Game

Go To

This is Trivia for the tabletop Collectible Card Game. For Trivia for the video game adaptation, see Pokémon Trading Card Game (1998).

  • Ascended Fan Nickname: The fan term "Eeveelutions", referring to the myriad of ways that Eevee can evolve, has been adopted for use by Nintendo in the card game.
  • Bad Export for You: International versions of the TCG are often accused of having lower-quality cards than the Japanese. This has gotten quite obvious with the XY era sets; the Japanese regular holos have a glossy finish and retain their shiny borders, while their English counterparts still have their matte finish and yellow borders.
  • Creator's Favorite: Atsushi Nagashima, the game director of the Pokémon TCG, has stated in interviews that his favorite Pokémon are Gengar and Darkrai, which, in turn, led to the former having an overabundance of prints and the latter being consistently made a strong choice for competitive play.
  • Meme Acknowledgment: When the Pokémon TCG social media pages announced the Professor Turo artwork for their Professor's Research card, it included some slow pans over the artwork in grayscale, referencing the Gigachad meme and how Turo has been associated with it due to his looks.
  • Recursive Adaptation:
    • Pokémon Trading Card Game (1998) and its sequel. There's also a manga based on the TCG, more than one based on the anime and several based on spin-off games...all based on the original game series.
    • The concept of passive abilities originally named Pokémon Powers ended up being introduced in the main series from Generation III onward under the name of Abilities. Then, two generations later, Pokémon Powers in the TCG were renamed to Abilities as well.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: Due to a lawsuit by Uri Geller who claimed it was unlawfully based on him, no Kadabra card has been reprinted in the TCG since the "Skyridge" booster pack. Abra, its pre-evolution, has only been released once since — in the "Mysterious Treasures" booster pack — and had an attack that allowed it to evolve straight to Alakazam, skipping Kadabra; and its evolution, Alakazam, has been released as a base Pokémon in every post-"Mysterious Treasures" booster pack that it's been a part of. However, in 2020, Geller gave Nintendo permission to print Kadabra cards in the TCG.
