  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: Tommy just says "You can do magic things!" to Trumpy, rather than "Trumpy, you can do magic things!".
  • Colbert Bump: Outside of Manos: The Hands of Fate, probably the best example of Mystery Science Theater 3000 unearthing a completely forgotten No Budget horror movie and giving it renewed attention, particularly since it was featured in what's often considered the first true standout episode of the entire series, and an episode that show creator Joel Hodgson has often cited as a personal favorite.
  • Creator Backlash: Director Juan Piquer Simon was not happy with the Executive Meddling (see below) and how much of the final film got changed.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: Tommy's dubbed voice was very obviously provided by an adult woman.
  • Executive Meddling / Follow the Leader: According to Mental Floss:
The Pod People was originally conceived as a straight-up alien invasion horror film. But while Los Nuevos Extraterrestres (the Spanish production’s original title) was still being filmed, Steven Spielberg released a little film called E.T. that became a blockbuster hit. The money people behind Pod People demanded several script changes at the last minute (“add a cute kid and make the alien more adorable!”) in order to make the movie more E.T.-ish, which partially accounts for the disjointed feel of this film.
  • Fake American: A whole cast of Spanish performers play American characters.
  • Follow the Leader: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was a massive box office hit, and the Friday the 13th franchise was also hugely popular at the time. The producers puzzlingly decided to try to rip them both off in the same movie.
  • Revival by Commercialization: Two pieces of music from obscure French synthesizer-based production library albums were used in the movie: "Morning Song" by Georges Rodi (the "syntho-birds" in the scene where the band has a picnic in the mountains) and "Music for Fun" by Roger Roger (Trumpy can do magic things). They're now both indelibly linked to this movie.
