  • Enforced Method Acting: In the picnic scene, Madeline Kahn initially refused to say the line "Let Miss Trixie sit up front with her big tits," objecting to the vulgarity. Peter Bogdanovich convinced her to say the line for only one take. This take appears in the final film. Kahn's odd reaction of embarrassment after saying the line is genuine.
  • Hostility on the Set: It took 31 takes across two days to shoot the one-take car conversation between Moses and Addie because Tatum O'Neal kept flubbing her lines. Each botched take meant that the car and camera crew had to drive back to the start point and begin again. Ryan O'Neal eventually started getting short with Tatum and threatened harsh punishment after each error.
  • Real-Life Relative: Moses and Addie are played by father and daughter Ryan and Tatum O'Neal.

  • What Could Have Been: John Huston was originally set to direct with Paul Newman starring opposite his daughter Nell Potts, and it would have been shot in color. Robert Evans suggested Warren Beatty or Jack Nicholson for the lead role.
