Trivia for Outside Xbox in general
- Accent Depundent: In the "7 Health and Safety Nightmares" video, Mike informs us that Nar Shaddaa is Scottish for "No, it's your dad."
- Corpsing: They'll cut laughter in the middle of a comedy bit, but they don't object to leaving it in when someone just offscreen dies laughing at the end of one.
- The beginning of this video is particularly noticeable as Andy can barely keep it under control as he pulls a Take That! against Mass Effect 3.
- Jane also finds it hard to keep a straight face when discussing the Batman villain Condiment King in "7 Achievements That Took Some Serious Planning".
- Mike is clearly struggling throughout the entire final section of "7 Silliest Character Names in Videogames (That We're Meant to Take Seriously)" when discussing Red Ocean's unfortunately-named protagonist.
"And while we never see his face, we will never forget Jack Hard. Because of how he reminds us of... what you might be doing if you need to change a tyre on an SUV. And literally nothing else."- In general, you can count the amount of Shows of the Weekend where Ellen doesn't at some point dissolve into hysterical giggling at what's going on with one hand, and have plenty of fingers left over.
Ellen, introducing 8 Times Skyrim Made Us Totally Lose It: "Hope you like my laugh, 'cause you're gonna hear a lot of it!"- If you look carefully, Jane comes close to cracking when insisting that "those are all the Fable games!"
- In a list of October 2022 releases Andy completely loses it during a discussion of A Plague Tale (a game with lots of rats eating people) that his eyes are watering and his face is flushed. The outtake at the end shows that it took Andy and Luke about two minutes to get through the whole thing, frequently stopping to laugh and swear.
- Poor Ellen is having the hardest time getting through the outro of 7 Iconic Announcers Who Didn’t Need to Go This Hard, as Luke goes completely ham in the background, acting as an overenthusiastic video-game announcer while Ellen tries her best to finish asking us to like and subscribe (although she completely gives up at the end). Since OX's outros are typically unscripted, you get the feeling that she might not have even known Luke was going to do this and was caught completely off-guard.
- Andy is seemingly in disbelief throughout the entire final entry of 7 Real-World Prizes You Could Win in Games (But Probably Wouldn't), barely able to contain the hilarious incredulity of having to cover a game as ridiculous as Pimania, which, to be fair, does have to be seen to be believed.
- Cowboy BeBop at His Computer:
- In "7 Times Games Looked Bad On Purpose", Jane notes how Mr. Game and Watch joined Super Smash Bros. in the fourth installment. He actually debuted in Melee.
- The footage used in "7 things bound to Happen When You Play Healer" has one of the points talk about how playing a healer is a lonely job, as nobody else plays the role, and they use Paladins as one of the examples as background footage. While their use of the game is accurate (as is the sentiment), the issue stems from the fact their footage contains three healers (Ying, Jenos, and Seris), not one, which is kind of counter to the point they were attempting to make.
- In this video talking about 8 games that could be battle royale hits, Mike mentions Paladins: Battlegrounds as one of these games. The information is, rather unfortunately, a few days out of date for when the video was released. The gameplay was changed drastically than what was shown in the video. Firstly, the game was initially separated into a closed alpha, later becoming an Early Access steam game. It's no longer called Paladins: Battlegrounds, rather it's now known by the less trademark-infringing name: Realm Royale. And finally, The Paladins champions themselves, as well as the cards and chest system are no long present, relying on disenchanting weapons for shards to make weapons within "forges", located in certain parts of the map.
- In this video on companies including Self-Deprecation in their own games, the spoiler reel erroneously uses the wrong logo for Hitman 2; it uses the Hitman 2: Silent Assassin logo instead. It's likely whoever edited that video didn't notice the mistake, and forgot about the whole Stopped Numbering Sequels thing.
- In "7 Embarrassing Easy Modes You Were Shamed For Using", Andy makes two mistakes:
- While Andy is correct in mentioning that the Super Tanooki suit from Super Mario 3D World is something found in Super Mario 3D Land, he bungled up this name, placing the "3D" after the word "land" instead of before it. One questions how he got this wrong, as he correctly said 3D World in the context of that game being a sequel to 3D Land and having the same naming convention should've tipped him off to this fact.
- He mentions the Super Guide from New Super Mario Bros. Wii; however the footage used is from New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, as the crystalline stalactites seen in the footages' background did not appear in Wii.
- In 7 Times You Got Mocked for Trying, So Never Try Again: Commenter Edition, Luke repeatedly mentions how nice Dante's hair looks in the game, while showing video and image footage of Nero, who admittedly is nearly identical to Dante.
- In 7 Sibling Rivalries That Got Way Out of Hand, Jane misidentifies the main antagonist of Super Paper Mario while talking about the Mario Bros., addressing him as Count Bleck instead of Dimentio.
- In 7 Most Kick-Ass Intro Cinematics that Didn't Need To Go This Hard, when talking about the World of Light opening in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Luke misidentifies Xenoblade Chronicles' Shulk as a Fire Emblem character.
- He Also Did: Everyone in the gang has history working in games media prior to the channel(s) starting:
- Mike was deputy editor of the Official Xbox Magazine until 2012.
- Andy was the co-host of "Sent U A MSG" on Xbox alongside Dan Maher.
- Jane made videos for Gamespot (coincidentally alongside future Oxventure DM Johnny Chiodini) and joining Andy from time to time.
- Luke worked as a tech journalist for CNET, even appearing on TV programmes like Screenwipe.
- Ellen was the newest to the gaming industry, but was with Microsoft-affiliated channel Xbox On for almost a year before she left to co-found Outside Xtra. She also has her own YouTube channel which has a few old Let's Plays from her university years; nowadays, it's updated sporadically.
- Promoted Fanboy: Well, fan-woman. Ellen was a massive fan of the original channel and jumped at the chance to join the team for Outside Xtra.
- Reality Subtext:
- In the "7 Utterly Wild Side Quests That Started Out So Simple" list video, Andy admonishes the viewer to "Drink responsibly, and never go on a pub crawl with a Daedric Prince of debauchery, or the Warwick University rugby society." Andy himself attended the University of Kent... but Jane did go to Warwick, suggesting that either she was the one who wrote that line, or Andy was taking the opportunity to get in a dig at her school.
- Mike—the first Oxboxtra host to become a parent—was notably the one who got stuck with presenting the "7 Scariest Babies That Prove Parenthood Is the Real Nightmare" video.
- Throw It In!: Very, very common in Team O.X.'s humour, to the point where they sometimes treat scripted gags as if they were accidents. The "7 Heartbreaking Details" list video ends with a particularly strong example:Andy: Why not watch something a bit more lighthearted, a bit more fun? We've got a video up here from us—
(sound of Ellen yelling at something in the next room)
Andy: You can hear Outside Xtra next door, creating premium content— (Jane laughs) —premium content like this video, down here, which is from them! I'm going to recommend it, even though they're trying to ruin my take. It's fine.
Other trivia for Outside Xbox
- The jaunty piano piece used in Oxbox's list videos (most prominent during the Spoiler Scroll, when there is one) was also used in the outro of Diane Spencer's "Seamless" comedy special. (The piece's actual title seems to be "The Messenger," by Silent Partner.)
