• Actor-Inspired Element: In order to act more naturally around each other and get familiarized with the house's layout, the four actresses spent a day there together, cooking and cleaning. At one point, they fixed the shoji screen, which Kore-eda liked so much that he incorporated it into the movie.
• Completely Different Title: Its original title is "Umi-machi Diary", or "Seatown Diary", named after the original manga.
• Improv: Kore-eda is known for not giving scripts to child actors in order to get natural performances from them. As Suzu Hirose was young but not exactly a child, he gave her a choice of either having a script or not. She chose the latter, believing it may be her last chance of being able to act this way.
