• Amateur Cast: All the actors in the film are amateurs found by the director on the streets of Kabul.
• Harpo Does Something Funny: Much of the dialogue was improvised by the actors.

• What Could Have Been: The film was originally meant to have a more idealistic ending, but the director grew disillusioned with this idea, and the film took a hard turn to the other side of the scale.
• Working Title: "Rainbow", in reference to an Afghan fable (told by Osama's grandmother) about a boy who became a girl when he went under a rainbow. Originally, the film ended with Osama walking under a rainbow to her freedom.
