• What Could Have Been: Millais originally added a water vole paddling in the water beside Ophelia, though he chose to paint it out before the finished painting was unveiled; this may have been because people who viewed the unfinished painting kept mistaking the vole for a hare, a rabbit, or even a cat or dog.
