- Fake American: Both main leads are played by non-Americans. Kaylie is Scottish Karen Gillan's first American role, while Tim's actor, Brenton Thwaites, is Australian.
- Homage: Mike Flanagan has stated flat out that he made the original short film (and as such this movie too) because he was unable to get the rights to Stephen King's 1408, included several references. Most directly, Kaylie's explanation to the camera's regarding the mirror's history parallels Gerald Olin's description of the titular room's history in the novella.
