Trivia / Ōban Star-Racers

Go To

  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: When airing on free-to-air television in Australia, TV program listings, Ad Bumpers, and similar materials identified the program as Jetix (one of the production companies behind the program, on whose channel of the same name the show aired in the US.note )
  • Channel Hop: The original series aired on Toon Disney's Jetix block in the US and Japan, and internationally on the Jetix channels, with free TV rights airing on other networks including CITV/GMTV, France 3, Super RTL and NHK-BS.
    • Sav! the World purchased back the rights to the series from Disney in 2018, with Savin Yeatman-Eiffel announcing plans for a Blu-Ray release of the series in its original HD format shortly after.
  • Completely Different Title: In Greece, it's known as OBAN: The Starships of the Galaxy (OBAN Τα Αστρόπλοια του Γαλαξία).
  • Descended Creator: Creator Savin Yeatman-Eiffel directed the French dub and voiced some additional roles.
  • Died During Production:
    • While a sequel series is apparently being worked on, a new Japanese voice actor would be necessary for Don Wei due to Unshō Ishizuka's passing in 2018. Assuming he has a role to play.
    • Ditto for Aikka, due to the sudden death of Kirby Morrow in 2020.
  • Dueling Works: With the much more obscure Alien Racers, which came out a year prior and also featured Wacky Racing.
  • Executive Meddling: Completely averted when Savin Yeatman-Eiffel refused to give in to demands from potential investors to rewrite the main character as a boy. He states on the behind-the-scenes documentary on the DVD's that this is (one of) the reason(s) why production on the show had been delayed.
  • International Coproduction: France and Japan.
  • In Memoriam: The Blu-ray release following the Kick Starter features this in honor of Kirby Morrow, Minoru Takanashi, and Junichi Watanabe.
  • Screwed by the Network: According to Savin Yeatman-Eiffel, Jetix Europe and Buena Vista International Television lost a lot of interest in the series shortly after the series aired, and after the initial runs in most countries, it never gained any reruns. Eventually, after being able to purchase back the distribution rights to the series from Disney, Sav! the World put together a kickstarter for a Blu-Ray release featuring the show in it's original HD quality, as Yeatman-Eiffel called it: "The way it was meant to be seen".
  • What Could Have Been: In The Art of Oban Star-Racers, it's revealed that when the story was first conceived in 1997, the genders and personalities of the main characters were different. A younger and less confident Rick Thunderbolt was the Earth Team pilot, an older Molly was the gunner, and Aikka was a princess.
