• Write Who You Know: The writer has stated, in the Author's Notes, that the protagonist is based off of the character she played in a production of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" with the same first name. This could be possibly referring to Willy Wonka Jr., which features a character called Matilda who is one of the candy kids that accompanies Charlie at the candy shop.
  • The running joke of the grandmothers wanting Charlie to marry Matilda so that they can get a lot of chocolate was based on a Facebook post on the wall of the girl who played Grandma Georgina between her, the girl who played Grandma Josephine, and the writer.
