• Reality Subtext: The skit in which Jinnai contemplated hanging himself because he lost his job, and gets talked out of it by a talking cicada, was sadly based on many Japanese people’s real-life reaction to the country’s “lost-decade” recession that began in 1990. It was meant to talk people out of doing anything rash, and one hopes it succeeded even a little.
