Trivia / Neil Breen

Go To

  • Bury Your Art: At some point, Neil Breen stopped selling Double Down and I Am Here....Now. Their listings on the websites of his other films read:
"Neil Breen, the sole legal owner to all rights to the film has taken it off the market. It’s not for sale anywhere."
  • Colbert Bump: Chances are you know about him from watching RedLetterMedia's, YourMovieSucks.org's or The Cinema Snob's videos on him.
  • Dawson Casting: By his own choice. Neil's protagonists are often meant to be much younger than he is, usually in their mid-30s (e.g. Dylan in Fateful Findings is supposed to be 38). He himself, on the other hand, was in his late 50s during the production of most of his movies.note  For comparison's sake, Dylan and Leah are supposed to be the same age, yet Neil looks old enough to be Leah's actress Jennifer Autry's dad (and probably is old enough—Jennifer Autry's birthdate is not given on IMDb or The Other Wiki, but unless she's aged spectacularly well, she's at least two decades younger than he is).
  • Denial of Digital Distribution: For years, Breen refused to make his movies available for streaming or digital download, instead opting to self-distribute them as DVD-Rs on his official website. This changed in 2020, when Breen released Fateful Findings and Twisted Pair as video on demand titles on iTunes and Amazon Video. Played straight with Double Down and I Am Here....Now, which Breen has taken completely off the market.
  • Fake American: Emily in Fateful Findings is ostensibly American, but is played by Libya-born Polish-Israeli actress and model Klara Landrat. She has a very distinctly un-American accent as a result, which is most audible during the scenes where she argues with Dylan.
  • He Also Did:
    • Neil is also an accomplished architect and real estate agent in reality, which provides him with (some) capital to invest into his productions.
    • The actress who plays Leah in Fateful Findings, Jennifer Autry, had a role as "Lornette #2" in the Angel episode "The House Always Wins". Said episode was shot in Las Vegas, like most Neil Breen productions.
    • Surpassing the previous example, Abraham Rodriguez, who played "Boy Astronomer" in Pass Thru, has gone on to become a fairly notable TV actor, portraying a Power Ranger in Power Rangers Beast Morphers and appearing in Saved by the Bell (2020), making him by far the most famous actor that a Neil Breen film ever had.
  • Parody Retcon: In remarkable contrast to other directors who fell into the same type of infamy he has, Neil continuously defies this, still regarding his filmography as wholly unironic dramas. When RiffTrax contacted him for a chance to Self-Parody by riffing on one of his own films, Neil refused, clearly under the impression that his reputation is a Vocal Minority.
  • Playing Their Own Twin: Neil plays both Cade and Cale in Twisted Pair, though the twins don't interact much with each other, due to their scenes being spliced together from footage of him playing their roles separately.
  • Prop Recycling: Breen owns several non-working (and in many cases, visibly broken) cell phones and laptops, which he uses repeatedly in all his movies, working with them despite it being plainly obvious that their screens aren't lit up. Guaranteed at least one will be seen destroyed, as they can easily be "repaired" for the next scene.
  • Reclusive Artist: Very little is known about Breen personally, aside from him living in Las Vegas and working as an architect whenever he's not making movies. He greatly prefers to keep his privacy, and refuses to divulge personal information in interviews, making much of his life a complete blur.
