Trivia / Mystery Science Theater 3000 S10 E01: Soultaker

Go To

  • Approval of God: In stark contrast to the lead actress and director's reactions, Joe Estevez loved the MST3K episode's riffing, especially getting a kick out of Crow's bit about him being "Martin Sheen's vastly more talented, yet unappreciated brother".
  • Creator Backlash:
    • Vivian Schilling is one of the more famously displeased creators at the Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatment of her work; she especially disliked the jokes comparing her to Tonya Harding, joking that she saw herself as "more of the Kristi Yamaguchi type." In 2016 when Shout! Factory's license expired for the film, her distribution company promptly raised the price of the license past what would be cost-effective for Shout to renew it, so the set it was part of went out of print. Some of Schilling's friends also wrote reviews on IMDb (which seem to be deleted now) taking the guys to task for mocking the film.
    • Director Michael Rissi also said that he disliked MST3K's treatment of the film, believing that the cuts they made caused the movie to look a lot worse than it actually is. He's also commented that while the uncut version occasionally aired on television before the MST3K episode premiered, note  networks stopped airing it afterwards, ensuring that the riffed and heavily-edited version is the only one most viewers are familiar with.
  • Fandom Nod: After hearing about how well Joel's life has gone since he escaped, Mike gets upset and starts asking questions like "What's he have that I don't?" The Bots advise Mike not to compare the two, saying it isn't healthy, in a nod to the massive Joel vs. Mike debate that dominated online discussions of the series in the Internet's infancy.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Vol. 14, which contains this episode, is now out of print due to the rights to this film expiring.
  • The Other Darrin: Lampshaded when Joel reacts to Crow's new voice, then approves, stating that proper maintenance means "changing your bowling pin" every so often.
  • What Could Have Been: If Joel had been able to be involved in the writing of the episode, he would have joined Mike and the bots in the theater. However, he didn't have enough time to spare to be involved in the writing.
