When told that it was designed to remain locked and cannot be removed, Jessica notes that a locked door that won't open is unfair to the player, which rings true even to today's games with seemingly impassable doors, corridors, foliage or other parts of a game just because it's not the right path the player should be taking (or that they weren't programmed to be passable, even for games marketed as being open world sandboxes).
