Trivia / Mr. Nobody

Go To

  • Acclaimed Flop: Mr. Nobody was (and still remains thus far) the most expensive Belgian film ever made, but due to the poor distribution it didn't make its money back. However, it still received strong reviews and quickly became a Cult Classic through word-of-mouth.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The movie is a remake and expansion of Jaco Van Dormael's 1984 short film È pericoloso sporgersi (which translates to "It's Dangerous Leaning Out" in Italian), which likewise shows a child at a train station having to choose whether to live with his mother or his father when they divorce and in the end taking a third path into the unknown after witnessing the outcome of both choices.
  • Acting for Two: Jared Leto and Diane Kruger play several versions of their characters, which are sometimes very different from each other.
  • Extremely Lengthy Creation: It all started with Van Dormael's aforementioned 1984 short film, then other "multiple choice paths" movies like Sliding Doors and Run Lola Run made him stop and figure out his own approach to the concept and tried to get it made since 2001 until the project entered its production in 2007.
  • Fake Brit:
    • Jared Leto is American playing a British man who, in some timelines, moved to Canada in his youth.
    • Sarah Polley and Clara Stone are Canadians playing Elise, who meets Nemo in England and yet has no British accent.
    • Michael Riley is Canadian, playing a British man who moves (back?) to Canada.
    • Linh Dan Pham is Vietnamese but raised in France, while Audrey Giacomini is French with Vietnamese ancestry. Both play Jean, who meets Nemo in Canada.
    • Diane Kruger is German and plays Anna, who was presumably raised to 15 in England and then moves to Canada.
  • Fake Nationality: The director Jaco Van Dormael is Belgian but plays a Brazilian man.
  • International Coproduction: Mr. Nobody was a collaboration between companies in Belgium, France, Germany and Canada.
  • Late Export for You: The film premiered in the US in 2011 and got a limited release in select theaters in 2013. Meanwhile it took seven years for the theatrical cut of Mr. Nobody to get an official dub and non-theatrical distribution in Italy.
  • What Could Have Been: Eva Green was originally considered for the role of Anna before the casting of Diane Kruger.
