Trivia / Mothra vs. Godzilla

Go To

  • Enforced Method Acting: When Haruo Nakajima (Godzilla's suit actor) slammed into the Castle during Godzilla's attack in Nagoya, some teeth from the Godzilla suit fell out. Also unknowingly at the time was that the impact of slamming into it also dislocated the jaw on the Godzilla suit, giving it the wobbly muzzle that is seen throughout the movie. SFX director, Eiji Tsuburaya liked the outcome of the shot so much that he keep it in the film. Also see Throw It In! below.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The American cut of the movie, which also has the scene of US naval ships fighting against Godzilla that’s exclusive to that cut, has only been released on the now out of print Classic Media DVD.
  • Playing Against Type: Kenji Sahara, who usually plays the young hero, is given the role of the villainous Torahata, a card-carrying financial swindler.
  • Throw It In!: During the scene where Godzilla is bombed with Napalm from a passing Curtiss C-47D Commando, the back of the Godzilla suit's head and neck were set ablaze. Following the script, Haruo Nakajima continued on with the scene as if nothing had happened. As with the castle scene mentioned above, Eiji Tsuburaya was very impressed by how the take panned out, and decided to keep it in the film.
  • Uncredited Role: While dubbed by Titra Studios, and featuring many of its usual roster including Peter Fernandez, none of the actors are credited.
  • What Could Have Been: The movie itself was drastically different than what we got with the movie now. Godzilla was intended to have a bigger role. He was intended to have washed ashore and be a tourist attraction instead of Mothra's Egg, and upon awakening, was to attack the Country of Rolisica, instead of Nagoya. In addition, instead of Mothra dying and giving rise to two new twin larvae, Mothra would fight Godzilla in her imago form alone, winning the final battle against him.
