- Accidental Downer Ending: Douglas Adams had somewhat of a self-confessed Creator Breakdown while writing the book, leading to its "Everybody Dies" Ending. He announced plans for another book to salvage the series, but died before he could write it. And Another Thing... was eventually written by Eoin Colfer to continue the series.
- Creator Breakdown: Regarding the Downer Ending of Mostly Harmless and the mixed reaction from fans, Adams conceded, "I just had a thoroughly miserable year, and I was trying to write a book against that background." He intended a sixth book to give the series a better conclusion, but died first.
- Died During Production: The books were technically completed, but Adams reportedly regretted the dark ending of the last book and wanted to write another. His death prevented that.
