  • Creator Backlash: In a 2022 interview, director David Koepp referred to the film as "a disaster. It was just a terrible, terrible disaster. On all levels, financially, critically, commercially, personally. It was just a hydrogen bomb."
  • Fake Brit: Americans Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow playing the British characters Mortdecai and Johanna.
  • Fake Russian: Romanov, the leader of the Russian criminals, is played by Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen. One of his henchmen is played by an actor born in Ukraine.
  • Fake Nationality: Many characters are played by someone not from the same country as them.
    • Spinoza, apparently a Frenchman, is played by Welsh actor Pal Whitehouse.
    • Emil Strago is definitely not an Australian, but his actor, Jonny Pasvolsky, is.
    • Hong Kong gangster Fang Fat is played by Philippine actor Junix Inocian.
  • Star-Derailing Role: This film was regarded as being the finishing blow for Johnny Depp’s career as an A-list leading man.
  • Stillborn Franchise: The film was based on the first Mortdecai story "Don't Point That Thing at Me", and the studio hoped to follow it up with adaptations of the other four stories. However, the film itself was a critical flop and a Box Office Bomb, barely making back half of its $60 million budget.
