- Actor Allusion:
- This universe's Johnny Cage is a former Power Rangers star. Matt Mullins, Cage's actor, also starred in Kamen Rider Dragon Knight as Kamen Rider Wing Knight. Super Sentai, the series adapted as Power Rangers, acts as a brother series to the Kamen Rider Toku series. Mullins was replaced by Casper Van Dien for the second series, who appeared alongside Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm Raiden alumni Clancy Brown in Starship Troopers.
- In the pilot episode Capoeira expert Lateef Crowder was Baraka, and Ian Anthony Dale played Scorpion. Both men previously portrayed Eddy Gordo and Kazuya Mishima, respectively.
- Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa, the original Shang Tsung, returns to the role after over a decade. He was also Kazuya's dad.
- All-Star Cast: For a web series, at least. Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade, Michael Jai White as Jax, Tahmoh Penikett (fresh from success in the new Battlestar Galactica and Dollhouse) as Kurtis Stryker, and in the second season Casper Van Dien as Johnny Cage and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa reprising his role as Shang Tsung.
- Ascended Fanon: Hydro appearing as a cyborg in Episode 9 might be a nod to a Lin Kuei companion of Sub-Zero's in the Malibu comicbook adaptations with the power of water (long before Rain became popular and mastered it) who later became a scarily popular fan and M.U.G.E.N character who functioned as a Cyber Sub-Zero before they actually did it in canon.
- Creator Cameo: In the Johnny Cage episode: Ed Boon as Ed "Goodman". Sure...
- The Other Darrin: Of the eight characters that carried over from the first season, only Kitana and Scorpion retained their original actors. Johnny Cage, Raiden, Mileena, Stryker, Sub-Zero and Shang Tsung were all re-cast for the second season.
- Quietly Cancelled: This seems to have been the fate of the series after season 2. Season 3 was reportedly filmed in its entirety but never released; some speculate this was because of Machinima's buyout by Warner Bros and later dissolution in 2018, effectively making it dead in the water from legal problems.
- Role Reprise: For the second season, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa returns to the role of Shang Tsung, after nearly two decades and at least one franchise reboot.
