Queer Show Ghetto: The film won two Oscars, but is barely known (to the point that Sam Smith mistakenly thought that they were the first gay artist to win an Oscar). Of course, it was written by Dustin Lance Black, whose original productions are mostly limited to be for an LGBT Fanbase.
A psephologist writes: Milk's election breakthrough came when the Supervisor elections were changed from "at large" (electing 8 Supervisors across the whole city) to district elections — a pivotal point made midway through the film. Milk had huge support in his local area, but with at-large elections that was swamped by the rest of the city. With a district election Milk only had to win the district that he already had the strongest support. Significantly, after his assassination, San Francisco reverted to at-large elections, claiming that district elections were divisive and harmful. Grassroots campaigners eventually got the city to move back to district elections in the 2000s.
