- Amateur Cast: Only a small fraction of the cast were full-time actors. Many of them answered a classified ad for casting. Carolyn Farina was working as a department store clerk at the time.
- Dawson Casting: The characters are supposed to be around 18 to 20, but were almost all played by people at least in their mid-20s. Taylor Nichols (Charlie) was 30!
- No Budget: Made for $225,000 and largely funded by Whit Stillman from his own pocket.
- Sleeper Hit: Passed over by a bunch of studios, it garnered huge attention at the Sundance Film Festival (which had originally rejected it), was picked up by New Line Cinema, and ended up grossing 10 times its budget.
- Those Two Actors: Chris Eigeman (Nick) and Taylor Nichols (Charlie) went on to star as cousins in Stillman's next film, Barcelona.
