Trivia / Megg, Mogg and Owl

Go To

  • Cliffhanger Wall: For what little chronology there is, the series has run into this a couple times; first with the events of Megahex only being followed up on come Bad Gateway, which in turn ended on a cliffhanger not touched upon by subsequent books.
  • Disowned Adaptation: According to the full release of Crisis Zone, Simon was in the talks with an unnamed television network to work on an animated adaptation of Megg, Mogg and Owl, as he was being approached by other networks who were interested in adapting the comic for years. Once they brought a comedian to write the script, communications between him and the network broke down for unknown reasons. Once Simon finally read the script, he was so disgusted by the changes made (the comic's edgy humor had been toned down, new characters were introduced, and the main cast has their personalities radically altered to appeal to a modern audience and to fit with current trends) that he tore it to shreds.
One of those millionaire Hollywood "comedians" was brought in to write the script and I assumed it would be alright, but communication broke down, which seemed to be the fault of the producers and executives. Once I finally saw the script, I was horrified. Bland new characters had been inserted, Owl was turned into a generic Tinder bro, Megg and Mogg were now cutesy morons that talked like woke drag queens. The edge had been dulled. It was not Megg and Mogg. They gave Megg superpowers and made her 400 years old, a political activist who had "marched at Salem". I recall some incredibly uncomfortable Zooms... My notes for the script were perhaps the most in-depth and academic notes ever produced in the world of script notes. Tearing that script apart was one of the most enjoyable things I've EVER done. It's a shame nobody will ever get to read both the horrible script by the millionaire Hollywood "comedian" and my incredibly harsh notes. I'm certain the show would have been produced, they waved a lot of money under my nose, told me to just suck it up and forget my artistic and ethical principles, but I turned it all down, got the fuck out of the deal as quickly as I legally could. If their version of Megg and Mogg, or anything like it, had made it to air, I would've had to kill myself. Everything I'd committed to paper, laboriously, for the past decade would be eclipsed by trite, saccharine pap in the public's consciousness. I could NOT allow that to happen. And it's NOT about the money., it's about making honest art, it's about the horror and squalor of existence! TV people aren't interested in that stuff, they don't want that shit right now, as much as they pretend they do. I'm still talking to TV people. I had a meeting a few weeks back with one of the major studios. It was fine. I point blank said the only way there would ever be a Megg and Mogg TV show is if I am the sole writer of the production, I'll accept a veteran co-writer if I must, but they would have to understand that they would "be my bitch", I would be in charge. They sent me an email a week or so ago and I just haven't gotten back to them... I think I just like making comics, I'm too used to having full control, comics is very luxurious in its autonomy, so pure and uncomplicated. Ain't actually that much money in TV either, over the years I've scoffed at many an offer, literally less money than what I can make yearly flipping fucking zines on Big Cartel. Why the fuck would I bother? Put up with a bunch of soft Harvard cunts who think they know better than me? Television needs to be taken down a peg, it's not the be all, end all medium it thinks it is. I want a comics revolution. Comics are better than TV...
  • Hypothetical Casting: Hanselman stated that if the comics ever received an Animated Adaptation, he would want Lindsay Lohan to play Megg. This arguably crosses into Comic-Book Fantasy Casting as the two have a similar figure and long, red hair.
