Trivia / Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate

Go To

  • B-Team Sequel: Due to being a Pilot Movie to the Megamind Rules! series, the sequel is helmed by DreamWorks Animation Television, which is the television division that produces TV shows based on DreamWorks properties, instead of the main DreamWorks Animation, the movie division. Aside from the much lower budget and the voice cast being completely different, Tom McGrath, director and producer of the original film, has no involvement in the sequel nor the series. However, Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons return as writers from the first film.
  • Content Leak: This film's existence was spotted early on October 2, 2023, registered under the Entertainment Identifier Registry. While the announcement of the sequel series was known since February 2022, this pilot film wasn't formally revealed until exactly 2 years later.
  • Development Gag: Sorta. The Doom Syndicate are based on an unused group of the same name that were intended to appear in the first movie. They did appear in its tie-in video game, though.
  • No Budget: By Eric Fogel's admission, the movie had a "miniscule" budget compared to the original film, in part because the already-low TV-level budget was also split for the Megamind Rules! series. As a result, the animation is of a much lower quality, and all of the Celebrity Voice Actors were replaced with cheaper substitute actors.
  • The Other Darrin: Given that the movie was produced on a much lower budget, none of the Celebrity Voice Actors from the original movie came back.
  • Pilot Movie: To the Megamind Rules! series, released the same day.
  • Refitted for Sequel:
    • The Doom Syndicate originally existed as concepts for the first movie, but went unused. They showed up in the video games Megamind: Ultimate Showdown and Mega Team Unite!, but were completely different in both appearance and backstory as depicted in this movie.
    • The only members of the Doom Syndicate who appeared in the artbook but not the games, Lady Doppler and Behemoth, finally appear in the flesh here.
  • Renamed to Avoid Association: It is made clear in the beginning that Minion is now called "Ol' Chum", in-universe due to a cease-and-desist order from fast food chain Mr. Minion's Meatsicles. He was very likely renamed in this film to avoid confusions with Illumination's Minions, whose first appearance happened the same year as the first Megamind movie.
  • Role Reprise:
    • Keith Ferguson reprises his role as Megamind from the tie-in games based on the first movie.
    • In the Latin American dub, Juan Alfonso Carrelero returns to voice Megamind.
    • In the Swedish dub, Magnus Rongedal and Caroline Söderström return to voice Megamind and Roxanne respectively.
  • Sequel Gap: 14 years after the first movie.
