Trivia / Matthew Sweet

Go To

  • Ascended Fanon: "Girlfriend" was originally named "Goodfriend", but Sweet changed the title after people misheard the lyric. Notably, both "girlfriend" and "good friend" are present in the song's lyrics.
  • Colbert Bump: The "Ive Been Waiting" music video helped to bring Urusei Yatsura and anime as a whole increased exposure in the United States a few years before Sailor Moon brought it into the mainstream.
  • No Export for You: Averted with Kimi Ga Suki, which was originally a Japan-only release until demand prompted a release in the U.S.
  • No-Hit Wonder: While he has 2 Gold certified albums, none of his songs did particularly great as singles. "Sick of Myself" was the only one to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 (at 58). He did have better success on the Alternative Songs charts where he had 3 top 5 songs as well as 2 top 20 songs on the Mainstream Rock charts ("Girlfriend" even made it to the top 10).
