- Several of Wii's online features were originally planned for Mario Kart DS, however, time constraints prevented them from being implemented.
- The idea of incorporating motorbikes into the franchise was originally proposed by producer Hideki Konno back when Mario Kart: Double Dash!! was under development. However, the idea was rejected at the time due to the team finding the idea of Mario on a motorbike to be too bizarre. The concept would soon become fully realized in this game.
- Throw It In!: According to his voice actor, Kenny James, Bowser's Mocking Sing-Song laugh in this game was an ad-libbed take by him, and to his surprise it was the one used in the final version.
- Vaporware: A HD port of the game was planned for the Chinese version of the Nvidia Shield TV as part of Nintendo and Nvidia's partnership, complete with online functionality being reactivated. However, the port kept getting delayed due to the pending approval of the game via the Chinese government due to some in-game changes, but communication between Nvidia and the government died down over time. And when the Nintendo Switch finally started selling beyond Nintendo's expectations in the country, the company removed the HD Wii games from the Shield TV in 2021, killing any chances of Mario Kart Wii HD being released.
