Trivia / Mario Kart DS

Go To

  • Dummied Out: This game had several unused tracks. Some were merely for testing, such as ones that actually have "test" in the filename and one that is simply an early version of Wario Stadium, but others include Double Dash!!'s Mario Circuit (which returned in Wii), a Koopa Troopa track, a variant of DK Pass without snow, an unused pinball track (that likely became Waluigi Pinball), "Dokan Course" (implied to be a warp pipe-themed track by the incomplete structures and "dokan" being the Japanese name for warp pipes), and Block City from Double Dash!! as an unused Battle Mode course.
  • Killer App: While the Mario Kart series was always a top-seller on Nintendo platforms, DS shattered all previous sales records, and was a turning point in Mario Kart evolving from a mere Mario Spin-Off to a AAA franchise in its own right.
  • Model Dissonance: Most of the taller racers besides Waluigi (whose legs protrude from the karts) have either no legs, or stumps where their legs would be. Normally this would be fine since everyone is stuck in a kart and you could pass it off as their lower body entering into the kart, but there are a few vehicles with very shallow seating arrangements, such as Waluigi's Zipper, Dry Bones' Banisher, or R.O.B.'S ROB-LGS. Once you get a gold trophy in every Mirror Mode cup, you unlock the ability to race with every character in every kart, enabling you to seat racers in vehicles like the Zipper and see that they no longer have legs.
  • What Could Have Been: The game's original logo, used as late as the in-store kiosk demos, was a continuation of the classic logo used since Super Mario Kart. For the final game, the developers chose to instead go with a new metallic logo, which has been used since.
