  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Lorca considered his play this in relation to the view of Mariana in Spain in his time. While he thought that Mariana was usually portrayed as a political hero, the play presents her as a romantic figure, motivated first and foremost by her love towards Pedro, the captain and rebel leader whose prison escape she aided. He said: "She is a Juliet without Romeo and she is closer to a madrigal than an ode."
