Trivia / Mägo de Oz

Go To

  • Black Sheep Hit: The arch-famous theme "Fiesta Pagana" will be forever the first thing people think on whenever they hear about Mägo de Oz, but it's actually an oddity in terms of style for what the band is, being a folkloric, medieval-sounding chirpy chant with unambitious lyrics, a simple instrumental and a basic beat. Non-fans who only know the band through "Fiesta Pagana" often get surprised when they learn Mägo does not do that kind of music, and instead it is the very same band that peforms such different pieces like "Los Renglones Torcidos de Dios", "Diabulus in Musica" or "Hechizos, Pócimas y Brujería".
  • Fan Community Nicknames: "Magodeozeros" was the term for the band's fandom in the 2000s, though it didn't really catch on and is seldom used nowadays.
  • Hostility on the Set: Clashes of egos have plagued the band since the 2010s, not helped by drummer Txus di Fellatio's reputation as a Control Freak. The first big bout of infighting ended in José Andrëa's departure in 2011 due to bad rapport with Txus and Carlitos, then Carlitos himself and Frank walked out in 2020 due to Txus registering the band name for himself. In 2023, singers Zeta and Patricia Tapia left Mägo amid rumors of more backstage turmoil, with Tapia later admitting that she no longer felt valued within the band.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • When José Andrëa left the group, they offered his place to Leo Jiménez, an usual collaborator to Mägo and a highly praised metal singer himself, who had just left his last project LEO:037. Jiménez felt honored, but he declined in favor of a singles career, which was ultimately felt the best decision for both sides (Jiménez has a reputation of being a mercurial artist). Still, when Mägo opened auditions to replace José, Jiménez recommended them Zeta, who eventually passed and became the new singer.
    • Around 200-300 singers from Spain and Latin America applied to the auditions for José's replacement. Ultimately, it was up to three candidates: Zeta (at the time, fresh from the band Al otro lado), Nacho Ruiz (from Santelmo) and Tony Menguiano (a powerhouse of music in Spain who works often with Mägo). Even after Zeta was chosen, Nacho Ruiz would collaborate with Mägo in the videoclip of "Fiesta Pagana 2.0", and was later recruited by ex-Mägo members for the band Runa Llena.
    • Rubén Kelsen, a childhood fan of Mägo who was at the time a member of band Bestia Negra (and coincidentally a student of Leo Jiménez), applied to the auditions too, but was rejected for being too young. Kelsen would join Mägo's entourage later, though, because when Txus checked up the work of Rubén's next band, Débler, he immediately jumped to be their mentor and producer; he would even put Rubén to temporally replace Zeta himself while the latter was ill in 2016 and 2018. Débler later separated from Txus in friendly terms when they discovered his schedule would make it hard for them to work together.
    • Other singers who applied were Tete Novoa (from Saratoga, Leo Jiménez's original band), Pancho Brea (Ankhara, also an usual collaborator to Mägo), Manuel Rodríguez (Sphynx) and Christian Bertoncelli (Renacer).
    • Plans for the disc that became Bandera Negra were changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which made the band decide they wanted a more uplifting, energetic album to counter the tenor of the times.
