Trivia / Magic Camp

Go To

  • Actor Allusion: This isn't the first time that Adam Devine's played a character called Andy for Disney.
  • All-Star Cast: Starring Adam Devine, Jeffrey Tambor, Gillian Jacobs, and the script was co-written by none other than Steve Martin (who was initially slated to appear in it).
  • Development Hell: The film was completed for a while, but Disney shuffled around its release date before eventually cancelling the theatrical release and dumping it on Disney+. While the official reason was never stated, it should be noted that these changes were made around the time one of its stars (Jeffrey Tambor) was getting hit with sexual abuse allegations.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: It was one of multiple streaming-exclusive movies removed from Disney+ in May 2023 as a cost-cutting measure, leaving no legal way to watch it.
  • Production Posse: Shares the same director and numerous producers and crew members from Disney's Freaky Friday.
  • Screwed by the Network: When sexual assault allegations against actor Jeffrey Tambor surfaced in 2017, Disney quietly removed Magic Camp from its April 2018 theatrical release date and was later announced to be bound for Disney+. Despite having been completed, however, the film was not included with the launch slate and went unmentioned until Disney+ quietly announced a release date when listing new content for the service in August 2020. The film received no promotional materials until just days before its release (none of which featured Tambor) and debuted on the service not only just a week before The One and Only Ivan (which was being much more prominently advertised after its theatrical release was cancelled due to COVID-19) but also on the same day that popular titles The Greatest Showman and Ant-Man and the Wasp arrived on the service. It was also Not Screened for Critics. Needless to say, it debuted very low down on the list of Disney+'s "Trending" titles.
  • What Could Have Been: Steve Martin was in talks to star as the lead back in 2014. After several rewrites, the lead character was changed to the much-younger Andy, with Adam Devine instead being cast. Martin dropped out and Jeffrey Tambor took his role as Roy.
