- California Doubling: Averted, initially, as it is set in Pittsburgh and filmed there, but for their trip to Chicago, they just replaced the Art Institute of Pittsburgh banners on street lamps with Art Institute of Chicago ones and called it good. They even show Pittsburgh's Liberty Avenue while Maggie is walking across the street from Jamie's convention to the Parkinson's group.
- Contractual Purity: While Hathaway had already broken out of hers, this is by far her most shocking role to date.
- Playing Against Type: Even for the director, Edward Zwick, the movie is a departure from his Oscar bait fare, but harks back to his very early work.
