The Movie
- Box Office Bomb: Budget: $65 million. Worldwide gross: $21 million. The fact that it came out on a very crowded weekend and in the wake of Rogue One, and terribly lacked promotional efforts, didn't help. Currently, it has the biggest third-weekend theater drop in history.
- Creator Breakdown: Ben Affleck was going through a divorce from Jennifer Garner and alcoholism during production.
- Deleted Role: Titus Welliver filmed scenes, but they were cut. Despite this, he is still prominently billed in the end credits.
- Dyeing for Your Art: Chris Messina gained 40lbs for his role as Dion Bartolo.
- Executive Meddling: This was Ben Affleck's passion project. He envisioned and filmed the movie as a three hour long character driven drama, with Joe's brother Danny Coughlin (Scott Eastwood was cast in this role) even appearing in a supporting role. But Warner Bros. thought audiences wouldn't want to sit through a three hour drama movie and wanted it to have more crowd pleasing action so Affleck was forced to cut it down to 129 minutes with Danny Coughlin's entire character and another role played by Affleck's regular Titus Welliver being axed. This also is probably the reason why many character arcs feel incomplete or rushed, which was a complaint among critics. It might also explain the pretentious narration as something almost identical happened on Blade Runner in 1982.
- Irony as She Is Cast: Loretta admits to Joe at one point that she doesn’t believe in God. In real-life her actress Elle Fanning is a Southern Baptist Christian.
- What Could Have Been:
- Leonardo DiCaprio was considered for the lead role. He decided to produce the film instead.
- Jennifer Lawrence and Lindsay Lohan were considered for roles.
- Jon Bernthal and Adam Driver were also considered for roles.
