- Acclaimed Flop: Received unanimous praise by critics and viewers alike, but failed to reach $80 million on a $60 Million budget.
- Acting for Two: Rooney Mara voices both of the Sisters.
- All-Star Cast: The film stars Charlize Theron, Ralph Fiennes, Matthew McConaughey, Rooney Mara, and George Takei. Damn.
- Billing Displacement: Art Parkinson, who voices the eponymous protagonist, isn't even listed on the film's poster.
- Box Office Bomb: Sadly, despite near-universal critical acclaim, Kubo is one of the last films in the 2016 Summer Bomb Buster. Budget: $60 million (production only), $100 million (including marketing). Box office: $77.5 million.
- Completely Different Title:
- Spanish-speaking world: Kubo and the Samurai Quest
- Bulgaria: Kubo and the Way of the Samurai
- Germany and Denmark: Kubo: The Brave Samurai
- Croatia: Kubo and the Magical Sword
- Israel: Kubo: Legend of a Samurai
- Norway: Kubo and the Magic Instrument
- Netherlands: "Kubo and the Magic Sword"
- Russia: Kubo: The Legend of the Samurai
- France: Kubo and the Magic Armor
- Brazil: Kubo and the Magic Strings
- Japan: Kubo: The Secret of the Two Strings
- Taiwan: Kubo: Legend of Magic Strings
- Vietnam: Kubo and the Samurai Mission
- Cross-Dressing Voice: The Japanese dub has Kubo voiced by Akiko Yajima.
- The Danza: Minae Noji as Minae.
- Fake American: Ralph Fiennes noticeably attempts to speak with an American accent rather than his native English one while playing the Moon King (presumably to fit in with the rest of the cast, the majority of whom are American), resulting in him slightly overpronouncing his Rs.
- Fake Nationality: The majority of the cast are not Japanese, or even of Asian descent.
- In Memoriam: The film is dedicated to the memory of the late Shigeru Mizuki, creator of GeGeGe no Kitarō.
- Screwed by the Network: The fact that viewers reported it having a very limited availability in theatres didn't seem to help alleviate the film of its Box Office Bomb status. It was also released directly on the heels of Suicide Squad (2016) and Sausage Party, giving it a lot of competition, and it also had far less advertising than Laika's previous films did.
- Vindicated by Cable: The film was unable to make back its budget in theaters, but it would eventually find a larger audience upon its release on Netflix.
