Trivia / Kingdom Hearts IV

  • Content Leak: The existence itself of Kingdom Hearts IV was first unofficially revealed in a NVIDIA leak that accurately revealed dozens of new games and ports by different companies, including several other Square Enix properties.
  • Milestone Celebration: The announcement of the game in 2022 was the main highlight of the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebration.
  • Refitted for Sequel: Less sequel and more original plan that didn't pan out. It's clear from old footage and new that Nomura is implementing many of the ideas he had for Final Fantasy Versus XIII as well as his version of Final Fantasy XV (before he was replaced with Hajime Tabata and put on Final Fantasy VII Remake). Outside of Yozora being a dead ringer for Noctis, the part where Sora runs through a building as it falls is taken directly from the 2013 re-reveal trailer.
  • Trolling Creator: In typical Nomura fashion, before a KH installment is released, one of the Orchestra performances to promote the series anniversary ended with him on stage announcing KH4 would be taking a new direction going forward, and then walking offstage without further explanation. Even Yoko Shimomura was blindsided by this and what it means.
  • What Could Have Been: Nomura confirmed at the 20th Anniversary event that he heavily considered making a Verum Rex game, after the in-universe video game of the same name from Kingdom Hearts III, before the fourth numbered installment, focused on Yozora and the cast of characters from his universe. He decided against it out of fear it would confuse players, worry fans of Sora, and push development of Kingdom Hearts IV further back after III spent a considerable amount of time in Development Hell.
